Types of Bio-Functionalized Magnetic Beads
Depending on the applications, MagQu's bio-functionalized magnetic beads are categorized into four types.
arrow Type I. Dextran coated Fe3O4 magnetic beads
Type-I magnetic beads consists of single-crystal Fe3O4 coated with dextran dispersed in PBS solution. Various sizes ranging from 20 to 160 nm in hydrodynamic diameter of Type-I magnetic beads are available. For a given size, the distribution of hydrodynamic diameter of Type-I magneticbeads is less than 10 %.

arrow Type II. Streptavidin-dextrancoated Fe3O4 magnetic beads
For tagging or labeling biomolecules, adequate antibodies are necessarily to be bound onto dextran on Fe3O4. Type-II magnetic beads provide sites for antibodies to sit on the dextran. In order to accept various kinds of antibodies and have a high-efficiency association between antibodies and dextran, MagQu utilizes the high affinity between avidin (or its derivates) and biotin, so that streptavidin is selected as these sites. Via coating streptavidin on dextran, Type-II magnetic beads can bind with any kind of biotinyl-antibodies. After mixing biotinyl-antibodies with Type-II magnetic beads, followed by magnetic separation to remove unbound biotinyl-antibodies, antibodies coated Fe3O4 magnetic beads are obtained. Hence, Type-II magnetic beads serve as a platform to prepare tremendous kinds of bio-functionalized magnetic beads.

arrow Type III. Antibody coated Fe3O4 magnetic beads

With Type-II magnetic beads, antibodies after biotination can associate with magnetic beads. In addition to the antibodies listed in Table I, MagQu does supply customer-designed antibody-coated magnetic beads, which also help you bind your antibodies onto magnetic beads. For versatile biomedical applications such as immunoassay, cell sorting, protein purification, MRI contrast enhancement etc., Type-III magnetic beads of 20 to 160 nm in diameter are available in MagQu's product series, as listed in the following table.

arrow Type IV. Amino group coated Fe3O4 magnetic beads

Through chemical modification of dextran, the magnetic beads are functionalized with amino group NH3+.  Thus, the beads become electrically positive and easily bind with electrically negative-charge molecules.  For example, NH3+ shows high affinity with nucleic acids.  Thus, Type IV magnetic reagent is useful to magnetically label nucleic acids for applications such as nucleic-acid purification and magnetofection.
